Project Description The Washington
Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, in conjunction with its regional
partners, contracted with the KFH Group
to develop a unified set of illustrated guidelines to direct the
standardization, design, and placement of Metrobus stops in the region. These guidelines were designed to assist
WMATA and its member jurisdictions in identifying appropriate stop locations
based on road way type, customer demand and surrounding land uses. The final report also includes recommended
design considerations, accessibility strategies, and amenities for transit
stop types including traditional bus and rapid bus, as well as a hierarchy of
stop investments based on type, location and usage. This study facilitated a dialogue
among the regional agencies leading to regional standards and exceptions for
application to Metrobus stops throughout the service zone. The report serves as a tool to assist WMATA
and its regional partners in applying a more uniform method for stop location
and design. A key task was to examine the current
spacing of stops along routes and project the impact of consolidating bus
stops along corridors where stops are more currently located more closely
than the spacing standards developed through this project. For more information about the
project, contact Ramona M. Burns at rmburns@wmata.com. |
